Robots to retrieve radioactive sandbags at Fukushima nuclear plant

Image
Robots to retrieve radioactive sandbags at Fukushima nuclear plant Robots will begin moving sandbags that were used to absorb radiation-contaminated water after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster as soon as this week, a spokesman for the plant operator said. TEPCO, the operator of the stricken Japanese power plant, says the bags on underground floors of two buildings have been left untouched following the nuclear accident. Radiation levels on the sandbags' surface are as high as 4.4 sieverts per hour, which means "humans can die if they approach" them, TEPCO spokesman Tatsuya Matoba told AFP. Japanese media reports said there were 2,850 bags to be collected, a number which has not been confirmed by TEPCO, which says that they weigh 41.5 tons in total. Two robots developed to collect the bags, one with a moving claw, were placed on the underground floors last Wednesday, Matoba said. Workers will use them to "carefully" bring the sandbags out in an operation th...

In Niigata ski resort area of Myoko, trepidation as more foreign money pours in

Image
In Niigata ski resort area of Myoko, trepidation as more foreign money pours in Three winters from now, Japan's snowy Myoko highlands in Niigata Prefecture will be home to a $1.4 billion mega-resort built by a Singaporean fund, with hotels charging some $1,350 a night. The project by Patience Capital Group (PCG) promises to create 1,000 jobs and spur winter tourism. But for many Myoko locals, foreign interest has become a double-edged sword, threatening overdevelopment, sky-high prices and the sweeping away of traditional culture. Even before news of PCG's interest, many inns, ski rental shops and restaurants in Akakura - one of five major ski resort towns in the Myoko region - had been snapped up by foreigners. But they're only interested in the snow and once that melts, those businesses shut. The town, also once a bustling hot-spring destination, no longer has enough going on to attract many visitors during the rest of the year. "If you come to Akakura ...

Sukiya beef bowl chain apologizes after rat found in customer's miso soup Beef bowl chain Sukiya has apologized after announcing that a rat was found in miso soup served at one of its stores in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, in January. According to the company's website, the rat (which the company called a "foreign object" in its statement) was found in miso soup served to a customer at the Sukiya Tottori Minamiyoshikata store on Jan 21. It is believed that the rat got into the miso soup while employees were preparing ingredients for other dishes. An employee failed to check each dish and served it to a customer. The customer noticed the rat immediately and notified staff. After the incident, the store was closed for two days. The company conducted hygiene inspections and instructed employees to thoroughly check the products before serving them. Sukiya said it will work to strengthen its management system to prevent recurrence. However, the company came in for c...

Japan fears Myanmar scammers will lure more youths to crime

Image
Japan fears Myanmar scammers will lure more youths to crime In the wake of the rescue of two Japanese teens who had been lured into working for scam syndicates in Myanmar, concerns are growing that more youths may be drawn into the fraudulent schemes operated by shady overseas groups. Japanese police learned in interviews with the high school boys upon their return to Japan that they had been told the work would be easy and they would be well compensated, including having their travel costs covered. Confined in locked compounds in civil war-ravaged Myanmar, the two said they were forced, along with people from other countries, to make calls attempting to scam people out of their money. If they refused to work, they would be beaten, starved or even subjected to electric shocks. In mid-February, Thai authorities successively took protective custody of the boys, aged 16 and 17, near the Myanmar border with Thailand. The boys hail from Aichi Prefecture in central Japan and Miyagi Pre...

After airstrikes, Israel says it has launched new ground operation in Gaza

Image
After airstrikes, Israel says it has launched new ground operation in Gaza The Israeli military said on Wednesday its forces have resumed ground operations in the central and southern Gaza Strip, as a second day of airstrikes killed at least 38 Palestinians, according to local health workers. The renewed ground operations come a day after more than 400 Palestinians were killed in airstrikes in one of the deadliest episodes since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023, shattering a ceasefire that has largely held since January. The Israeli military said its operations have extended Israel's control over the Netzarim Corridor, which bisects Gaza, and were a "focused" maneuver aimed at creating a partial buffer zone between the north and the south of the enclave. Palestinian militant group Hamas said the ground operation and the incursion into the Netzarim Corridor were a "new and dangerous violation" of the two-month-old ceasefire agreement. In a statemen...
