Japan's counterfeit import cases up 4.3% at record 33,000 in 2024
Japan's customs uncovered a record 33,019 cases of imported products infringing intellectual property rights in 2024, up 4.3 percent from the previous year.
The number of seized items jumped 22.8 percent to 1.3 million, reflecting a growing number of purchases through online sites, according to the Finance Ministry.
By country of origin, China accounted for the largest share at 80.6 percent, or 26,604 cases, followed by Vietnam at 9.7 percent and Malaysia at 3.0 percent.
The biggest portion of the cases involves clothes at 11,774, or 31.1 percent, followed by bags at 7,293, or 19.3 percent, while tobacco and smoking-related products accounted for the largest portion of the total goods at 191,976.
The estimated market value of genuine versions of the seized products stood at around 28.2 billion yen ($191 million).
